May 1st Anti-war, Anti-nuclear Demonstration

(The following was received by Chelsea Neighbors United to End the war. It is the announcement by United For Peace and Justice of the plans for May 1st):

NO Weapons of Mass Destruction Found in Iraq
10,350 Nuclear Weapons of Mass Destruction Found in the U.S.
Cost of the War in Iraq: Tens of Thousands of Lives and Billions of Dollars

On Sunday, May 1st, the day before the UN month-long review of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, we will call for the abolition of all nuclear weapons, for an end to the war in Iraq and for funding for essential programs in our communities as we march by the United Nations and rally in Central Park. This will be the first opportunity for a national march and rally to say NO to Bush and his war machine since the elections.

Ctywide organizing meeting on Tuesday, April 12,
This is a continuation of our efforts to end the war in Iraq.
Leaflets and posters are available at the UFPJ office (209 West 38th Street, 9th floor); call the office now to volunteer - 212-868-5545.

On May 1st we will march to Central Park to:

End the War in Iraq: Bring Our Troops Home Now
Fund Essential Programs at Home, Not War Abroad
Abolish All Nuclear Weapons Worldwide

In May, world leaders, mayors and people from around the world will converge on the United Nations to decide the fate of the endangered Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Signed by 189 nations, the NPT prohibits the acquisition and production of nuclear weapons by non-nuclear states, and requires nations that have nuclear weapons to negotiate their elimination. While demanding NPT compliance by nations such as Iran and North Korea, backed by threats of war, the U.S. hypocritically ignores its own NPT obligations. It threatens first use of nuclear weapons, upgrades its nuclear weapons systems and infrastructure as part of a "nukes forever" policy, and spends $40 billion on nuclear forces annually.
The Bush administration invaded Iraq charging Saddam Hussein with developing weapons of mass destruction - meaning in large part nuclear weapons. The whole world now recognizes this lie as an attempt to justify a war to control access to Iraq's oil and enhance U.S. power in the Middle East. The war in Iraq rages on with mounting casualties and a country in ruins, and the cost of war translates into drastic cuts in vital services in our communities, hitting people of color, the poor, and working people the hardest.

On Sunday, May 1st, the day before the NPT Conference opens, United for Peace and Justice and Abolition Now! are organizing a massive demonstration in the streets of New York City to highlight the links between the war in Iraq and the need to abolish nuclear weapons across the globe including in the U.S. Join Us!
