Maine today, New Hampshire tomorrow

Yesterday Maine became the fifth state to legalize gay marriage, following Mass- achusetts, Connec- ticut, Iowa and Vermont. The New Hampshire legislature passed a same-sex marriage bill, the governor could sign it as early as today (Thurs.) It's very likely that the opposition to gay marriage in Maine will follow the California example and pursue what the NYT calls a "people's veto," since Gov. John Baldacci signed the bill. The future of gay marriage in Maine may depend on what its organized supporters learned from Prop. 8. The Times quotes the Maine Marriage Alliance's Rev. Bob Emrich: "... they are very well funded, they have a great organization, and they've been at it a long time." The idea that civil unions are the equivalent of marriage is about as valid as "Separate but Equal" was. But just as in the case of schools, it's separate and unequal.
