For a number of years, as Cultural Editor, I wrote a column ("Contested Terrain") for The Guardian Newsweekly. It focused on the politics of culture and the culture of politics. This seems like a good time to rejoin the fray. Culture and politics are more of a contested terrain today than ever before. In the words of Matthew Arnold, written in 1852 (1859), "And we are here as on a darkling plain/Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight,/ Where ignorant armies clash by night."
