The 1950 Senate race in California pitted the popular Democratic Congresswoman Helen Gahagan Douglas against a young Republican member of the House named Richard Nixon. The campaign was destined to be one of the nation's most infamous and is notable as the race that Nixon acquired his "Tricky-Dick" moniker. Nixon waged an unrelenting red-baiting campaign, calling Gahagan Douglas "pink right down to her underwear." The contest is also well-known as the first "modern election" in that dirty campaigning was married to sophisticated media technology.
Don't Blame Me, I Voted for Helen Gahagan Douglas is a new comedy/drama by Michelle Willens and Wendy Kout that tells the true story of the infamous 1950 U.S. Senate race in which Nixon destroyed the elegant Congresswoman (and wife of actor Melvyn Douglas).
On May 1, thanks to the playwrights' generosity, there will be a special May 1 reading of the play starring Christine Lahti and James Naughton with all proceeds going to The Nation magazine.
Nation writer John Nichols will be speaking at a special post-reading reception. Taking place at 7:30 on May 1 at Symphony Space in Manhattan. Click here for info and to buy tickets.

Today: Protest miscarraige of justice in Sean Bell murder
Sean Bell, Nicole [Paultry] Bell
and their baby
COPS ACQUITTED ON ALL COUNTS IN THE MURDER OF SEAN BELL
RALLY TODAY,
5:30 PM
Queens DA's Office, 125-01 Queens Blvd. (bt Hoover Ave and 82nd Ave.)
(E or F train to Union Turnpike.)
Once again the justice system has failed to protect the rights of people of color. A message is once more sent that law enforcement officers can act with impunity. Sean Bell joins a tragic list of those victimized by police, who have been denied justice. The names sound through history like drumbeats in a funeral procession: Amadou Diallo, Patrick Dorismond, Eleanor Bumpers, Alberta Spruill, Ousmane Zongo, and on and on and on.
As United for Peace and JUSTICE, we must always respond to injustice. We must affirm that all human life is worthy, that injustice must always be confronted. That is why we urge everyone who can to come out to the protest rally today.

Media buoys Clinton chances
I think this brief discussion on the Democratic race, which took place before the results of yesterday's Pennsylvania primary were known, highlights the negative role the media has played. It's between Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann. Although they don't actually say it, I think that the media has played this role because they need a good story to get ratings, they really don't care about democracy. (video first posted on YouTube)
Media makes much of little in PA
From America Blog
Hillary gets only small delegate bump from PA
by John Aravosis (DC)
As predicted, Pennsylvania changed nothing. Obama still leads Hillary by 131 delegates overall, and 156 pledged (not "super") delegates:
NBC News has allocated so far a 75-65 split for Clinton out of Pennsylvania;
18 delegates are not allocated yet.
With that, Obama now leads by 156 pledged delegates: 1,482-1,326.
Our superdelegate total is Clinton 262, Obama 237.
In all, Obama now leads by 131 overall: 1,719-1,588.

May 2-4: Jobs with Justice National Conference
Jobs with Justice National Conference
May 2-4, 2008
Providence, Rhode Island
The 2008 JwJ National Conference will attract a diverse group of more than 1,000 labor, community, student, and religious activists from across the and the world for sessions on building power for workers, health care for immigrant rights, the campaign for a floor wage in Asia, student and youth organizing, low-income worker organizing, music, art, fun, and more!
For more than a decade, the Jobs with Justice National Conference has provided activists with a space to come together to celebrate our victories, share our experiences, learn new skills, and build stronger relationships. Year after year this inspiring gathering brings together leaders and activists from around the country and the world who are working to build powerful coalitions for workers' rights and economic justice. The conference combines skills-building and information-sharing workshops with issue-focused strategy sessions to provide opportunities for participants to deepen their commitment to Jobs with Justice at a national level, and to take concrete plans of action back to their local coalitions. In addition to plenary sessions with distinguished speakers and skills-building workshops, the JwJ conference is an opportunity to celebrate the work that local coalitions have done over the last year and to have some serious fun! At each National Conference, we also identify a local campaign where national presence can make a difference and we organize an action to call attention to the campaign.

How about moderate Republicans voting Democratic?
The media political pundits have talked allot about so-called "Reagan Democrats" voting for McSame, but have paid very little attention to the possibility of moderate Republicans who are deeply sick of the Bush/Cheney brand of foreign and domestic policies voting for a Democratic candidate. For example:
Obviously this is limited anecdotal evidence, but it's a potential worth media attention.
McCain is just a Bush clone and offers nothing for us, our future or our kids. And, he wants to keep the [Iraq] war going.” she said. These are the words of Richard L. Fricker's 39-year-old niece, Penny, "a mom with a child in “Christian” day-care, a Presbyterian, a manager of an upscale jewelry store, a wife of a department store manager – and, oh yes, a Republican."
But the jump to the Democrats comes with one caveat:
“There’s no way I’d vote for Clinton, I just don’t like her. If the choice is Clinton-McCain, it will be McCain.”
Obviously this is limited anecdotal evidence, but it's a potential worth media attention.
April 21: Protest war criminal Cheney

Monday April 21, 2008
starting at 10:00 AM
740 Park Avenue (@71st Street)
Vice President Cheney will be in town shilling for cash for NY Congressman Vito Fossella. They'll be hosted by NYC's wealthiest resident, David Koch, the billionaire head of Koch Industries, a conglomerate with hugely polluting oil and gas holdings. Koch Industries is the second largest privately-held company in the U.S. and a major contributor to Republican campaigns.
Protest Cheney and tell the luncheon guests: Fossella must go!
This protest is being organized by Truth 13, an independent group of concerned citizens dedicated to removing New York's 13th Congressional District representative Vito Fossella from office. Their mission is to educate voters of the 13th Congressional District about Vito Fosella's atrocious voting record and the bad company he keeps. Joining in the fun will be members of Codepink, NY Progressive Democrats of America and others.
Contact Merle Mceldowney (Truth 13) 212 933-0290 merle.mceldowney@gmail.com for more information.
In 2000, Koch Industries faced a federal indictment charging it with concealing releases of 91 metric tons of the carcinogen benzene from a Texas refinery. If convicted, the company faced fines of up to $352 million, plus possible jail time for its executives. Under George W. Bush's presidency, the U.S. Justice Department dropped charges the day the case was scheduled to begin, in return for a one-time $20M fine -- less than 6% of what it could have been.

Nancy Pelosi "afraid ad"
"There is something truly phenomenal going on in San Francisco. A political novice by the name of Shirley Golub has the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, running scared, afraid that if she agrees to debate the challenger she will not be able to defend her record of capitulation, afraid the voters of the 8th congressional district will no longer make excuses for political cowardice . . . just afraid.
"And that's exactly the way Shirley Golub called it last week, when she called Nancy Pelosi out for being a political coward, using those exact words. Listen to the radio ad they are all talking about for yourself."

On E Street Obama's the choice

The following appeared on Bruce Springs- teen's website today:
"Dear Friends and Fans:
"LIke most of you, I've been following the campaign and I have now seen and heard enough to know where I stand. Senator Obama, in my view, is head and shoulders above the rest.
"He has the depth, the reflectiveness, and the resilience to be our next President He speaks to the America I've envisioned in my music for the past 35 years, a generous nation with a citizenry willing to tackle nuanced and complex problems, a country that's interested in its collective destiny and in the potential of its gathered spirit. A place where "...nobody crowds you, and nobody goes it alone."
"At the moment, critics have tried to diminish Senator Obama through the exaggeration of certain of his comments and relationships. While these matters are worthy of some discussion, they have been ripped out of the context and fabric of the man's life and vision, so well described in his excellent book, Dreams From My Father, often in order to distract us from discussing the real issues: war and peace, the fight for economic and racial justice, reaffirming our Constitution, and the protection and enhancement of our environment.
"After the terrible damage done over the past eight years, a great American reclamation project needs to be undertaken. I believe that Senator Obama is the best candidate to lead that project and to lead us into the 21st Century with a renewed sense of moral purpose and of ourselves as Americans.
"Over here on E Street, we're proud to support Obama for President."
Petition to close the School of the Americas

Here's an important email we just got:
Petition to Presidential Candidates: Close the School of the Americas
The School of the Americas (SOA), now called the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, provides training by the US military to some of the most violent militias around the world. Soldiers trained at the SOA have been responsible for many human rights abuses, including those directed at workers and labor organizers. The Latin America Solidarity Coalition (LASC) is circulating this petition to Senators Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and John McCain. Urge them to take a public stand for the closure of the School of the Americas (SOA/WHINSEC) and to commit to close this notorious institution by executive order if they will be elected.

Creation Explained
(This appeared in our e-mail a while ago. Thought you might enjoy it)
I NEVER HEARD CREATION EXPLAINED THIS WAY BEFORE !!!
In the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth and populated the Earth with Broccoli, Cauliflower and Spinach, green and yellow and red Vegetables of all kinds, so Man and Woman would l ive Long and Healthy Lives.
Then using God's great gifts, Satan created Ben and Jerry'sIce Cream and Krispy Creme Donuts. And Satan said, "You want chocolate with that?" And Man said, "Yes!" and Woman said, "and as long as you're at it, add some sprinkles." And they gained 10pounds. And Satan smiled.
And God created the healthful Yogurt that Woman might keep the Figure that Man found so fair.
And Satan brought forth white flour from the wheat, and sugar from the cane and combined them. And Woman went from size 6 to size 14.
So God said, "Try my fresh green salad."
And Satan presented Thousand-Island Dressing, buttery croutons and garlic toast on the side. And Man and Woman unfastened their belts following the repast.
God then said, "I have sent you heart healthy vegetables, and olive oil in which to cook them."
And Satan brought forth deep fried fish and chicken-fried steak so big it needed its own platter. And Man gained more weight and his cholesterol went through the roof.
So God then created a light, fluffy white cake, named it "Angel Food Cake," and said, "It is good."
Satan then created chocolate cake and named it "Devil's Food."
God then brought forth running shoes so that His children might lose those extra pounds.
And Satan gave cable TV with a remote control so Man would not have to toil changing the channels. And Man and Woman laughed and cried before the flickering blue light and gained pounds.
Then God brought forth the Potato, naturally low in fat and brimming with nutrition
And Satan peeled off the healthful skin and sliced the starchy center into chips and deep-fried them. And Man gained pounds.
God then gave lean beef so that Man might consume fewer calories and still satisfy his appetite.
And Satan created McDonald's
and its 99-cent double Cheeseburger. Then said, "You want fries with that?"
And Man replied, "Yes! And super size them!" And Satan said, "It is good."
And Man Went Into Cardiac Arrest.
God Sighed and Created
Quadruple Bypass Surgery.
Then Satan Created HMOs.
If you don't send this to five old friends right away there will be five fewer people laughing in the world

Sen. Clinton and the guns of truth
It would have been better for all of us if instead of teaching her how to shoot a gun Senator Clinton's father had taught her how to tell the truth.
I can't believe that any small town voter is dumb enough to believe that because she has a shot and a beer (photo op) and reminisces about learning to shoot guns, that Clinton understands their pain. The main difference between her and Barack Obama is that he tells the truth, she tells everyone what she thinks they want to hear. Last time I looked that was called pandering and patronizing. Eight years of lies at the highest levels of government is enough. Democracy depends on honesty and an administration that has enough respect for the people to tell the truth no matter how disagreeable it may be. Mike Lupica said in today's (Tues.) New York Daily News:

You are allowed to think that he [Obama] can come across as half-a-phony sometimes. Still the idea that he is the elitist in this race is as much a fiction as Hillary's fiction about her trip to Bosnia.
Sometimes Obama must think that the people he is up against lie just to stay in practice.

April 17: Free screening: Film about Iraq

Thursday, April 17, 7:30pm

A screening of 500 Miles to Babylon, a compelling film about Iraq under U.S. occupation.
Filmmaker David Martinez will be on hand to discuss his experiences in Iraq.
Sarah Husain, a representative of the War Resisters League’s Youth and Counter Militarism Project, will discuss counter-recruitment campaign efforts in New York City.

Brooklyn NY 11211
500 Miles to Babylon is a one-hour documentary shot in multiple cities in Iraq in 2003-4. Narrated by the filmmaker, using footage shot in Iraq threaded with graphically animated archival sequences to provide historic context, the film addresses the current war not simply as a conflict over petroleum profits or a scheme to fill a company’s coffers, but as part of a larger American imperial project.
Through impromptu interviews, glimpses of daily life, still photographs, and footage of car-bombs, demonstrations, night-time graffiti artists, Sufi rituals, and the celebrations following Saddam’s capture, 500 Miles To Babylon reveals the complex situation in contemporary Iraq through a personal lens. Far from being a simple anti-war movie, 500 Miles illustrates the terrible complexity of a people brutalized by a dictatorship, and the catastrophic results when that system is changed overnight by shortsighted military means.
500 Miles is also the story of director David Martinez, an American independent filmmaker in Iraq, attempting to understand the country and its ever-changing situation. One chapter of the film relates his experience in Fallujah where he temporarily abandoned his camera and was part of an ambulance crew fired on by U.S. snipers, only to be taken prisoner later by mujihadeen fighters in the same city. This is a film not about soldiers, not about governments, but about Iraqi civilians and a handful of independent journalists in a country being turned into hell. A cinema verite narrative of daily life, disintegration, and the humor that ordinary people adapt when living in a warzone.
With a soundtrack of Iraqi Choubi songs compiled by Sublime Frequencies.
David Martinez is a filmmaker and journalist originally from Texas, currently based in San Francisco. He is currently finishing, (along with co-producer Shane Bauer), a documentary entitled Songs To Enemies And Deserts about Darfuri rebel groups, filmed in Western Sudan in Summer 2007. He contributed war footage to films like Fahrenheit 911 by Michael Moore and Iraq For Sale by Robert Greenwald. His reporting on social movements and conflicts has appeared in The San Francisco Bay Guardian, Filmmaker Magazine, CounterPunch, and Islam Online. He has worked in feature film production with directors John Sayles and Richard Linklater, and as an actor in the animated feature Waking Life, directed by Linklater. He has also been employed as a school teacher, social worker, bike messenger, and taxi driver.
The War Resisters League’s Youth and Counter Militarism Project, based in New York City, provides young people with the resources and training necessary to agitate against military recruitment in their schools and communities. Their main focus is the Not Your Soldier Project. The long term goal is to bring youth organizers and young veterans together to help build a unified, national anti-war movement. To help accomplish this, they produce materials, conduct trainings, and work in a number of national coalitions.

Dennis Berger Presente!
We're going to a memorial tomorrow (Sat.) for our friend and comrade Dennis Berger. I have not written anything about Dennis and his death because I've had a hard time getting my head around his no longer being here. No one I know better represented John Donne's famous Elegy than Dennis,
I'll try to say more after the memorial.
No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, We are the less. .... Any one's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.Dennis's death definitely diminishes all of us.
I'll try to say more after the memorial.
Katie Couric out at CBS?

The hot news in media circles is the likely demise of the Katie Couric Evening News experiment at CBS. The New York Daily News TV columnist Richard Huff says
CBS needs to pull the plug on Katie Couric anchoring the "CBS Evening News" immediately. This despite his conclusion that
The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric is a fine newscast. Side by side, it's just like the othersBut
Couric has a target on her back. She can do no right in the eyes of the media, the gossip crowd and those working in the navel-gazing world of TV news.If you doubt that Couric "has a target on her back," listen to New York Post resident scold today (Friday)
Katie was trotted out to the public less than two years ago as no less than the savior of modern American communications - a woman combining Joan of Arc's zeal and Madonna's legs. And believe me it only gets worse. Huff says that unlike her competitors "she's treated as a celebrity." I have never been a big Katie Couric fan, but it seems to me that being the first solo female network news anchor it would be hard not to be treated like a celebrity. Her only predecessors (as co-anchors) Barbara Walters (1976) and Connie Chung (1993) were treated the same way. And in their cases it also contributed to their difficulties.
She had the gumption to smash through the glass ceiling to make the world safe for gals. Well, at least for those who rake in $15 million a year, plus a free ride to work.
But now that her career has crashed and burned into a wicked-witch-size puddle, it's time to say it: Katie screwed up on behalf of more than just one woman who had trouble reading the TelePrompTer with conviction.
She did it for all of us.
But their biggest problem is being the first woman to crack through in a man's world. The biggest problem with Couric's failure to launch is that it will probably be another 15 or 20 years before a network is willing to try again. Here's the Daily News list of possible replacements: Anderson Cooper, Harry Smith, Chris Wragge (WCBS/Ch.2) and Scott Pelley (60 Minutes). Notice the common characteristics of all of them: testosterone. Even if Couric was wrong from the idea there are several great female news people who would make great anchors: NBC's Andrea Mitchell, the Today Show's Ann Curry and ABC's Elizabeth Vargas (who was an anchor until she got pregnant).
If CBS has any imagination, which is doubtful, if they do fire Couric, they'll replace her with a real female journalist and even I might watch CBS Evening News with ....

Obama "grows up" on Iraq
New York Daily News columnist, Iraq invasion and occupation enthusiast and John McSame groupie (ex-W groupie) Michael Goodwin, in his comments on the Senate Petraeus/Crocker hearings, chose to disrespect Barack Obama. By saying that "everybody wants a 'successful resolution' [in Iraq] and that nobody wants a 'precipitous withdrawal' of our troops. He also seemed to be seeking a way of defining limited victory rather than sticking with his vow of a rapid retreat," Obama was displaying "a grownup moment for him,...that reflects the stubborn reality of Iraq." In other words, for Goodwin, if you agree with him you are a grownup, if not I guess an immature, perhaps obstreperous child. Of course, neither witness answered the question Obama, as well as Clinton and many others, actually asked.
OBAMA: And so my final -- and I'll even pose this as a question and I won't -- you don't necessarily have to answer it -- maybe it's a rhetorical question -- if we were able to have the status quo in Iraq right now without U.S. troops, would that be a sufficient definition of success?Petraeus and Crocker didn't answer the question (What would constitute conditions that would allow us to withdraw our troops? What would "victory" actually look like?) no matter who asked it. That's because they now have us in a classic Catch 22. When conditions are bad, we can't leave. When conditions improve we can't leave because they are "reversible." If they answer the question they won't any longer be able to dance this two step on Iraq. They won't be able to sell Congress this Iraq snake oil.
It's obviously not perfect. There's still violence, there's still some traces of Al Qaida, Iran has influence more than we would like. But if we had the current status quo, and yet our troops had been drawn down to 30,000, would we consider that a success? Would that meet our criteria, or would that not be good enough and we'd have to devote even more resources to it?
CROCKER: Senator, I can't imagine the current status quo being sustainable with that kind of precipitous drawdown.
BIDEN: That wasn't the question.
OBAMA: No, no, that wasn't the question. I'm not suggesting that we yank all our troops out all the way. I'm trying to get to an endpoint. That's what all of us have been trying to get to.
And, see, the problem I have is if the definition of success is so high, no traces of Al Qaida and no possibility of reconstitution, a highly-effective Iraqi government, a Democratic multiethnic, multi- sectarian functioning democracy, no Iranian influence, at least not of the kind that we don't like, then that portends the possibility of us staying for 20 or 30 years.
If, on the other hand, our criteria is a messy, sloppy status quo but there's not, you know, huge outbreaks of violence, there's still corruption, but the country is struggling along, but it's not a threat to its neighbors and it's not an Al Qaida base, that seems to me an achievable goal within a measurable timeframe, and that, I think, is what everybody here on this committee has been trying to drive at, and we haven't been able to get as clear of an answer as we would like.
CROCKER: And that's because, Senator, is a -- I mean, I don't like to sound like a broken record, but this is hard and this is complicated.
I think that when Iraq gets to the point that it can carry forward its further development without a major commitment of U.S. forces, with still a lot of problems out there but where they and we would have a fair certitude that, again, they can drive it forward themselves without significant danger of having the whole thing slip away from them again, then, clearly, our profile, our presence diminishes markedly.
But that's not where we are now.
OBAMA: Thank you for your indulgence, Mr. Chairman.

No More Tax Dollars for Bush's Iraq Occupation

Congress will soon consider President Bush's latest request for "emergency" funding to continue to pay for the occupation of Iraq. Representative John Murtha, chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, will head up the committee that writes the legislation for this funding request.
After five years and more than five hundred billion dollars sunk into this occupation, our elected officials should stand up and say "no more."
Please sign the petition below, urging Rep. Murtha to appropriate funds only for a responsible and timely redeployment of our troops out of Iraq.
Former Congressman Tom Andrews and members of the Win Without War coalition will deliver your signatures to Congressman Murtha in person before the supplemental appropriations bill is written.

March Madness: and then there was one

Kansas wins national championship; defeats Memphis 75-68.
I didn't expect much of a game. But with Mario Chalmer's three point shot to tie the game in regulation, you couldn't have asked for a more exciting game. Both teams deserve a great deal of credit. You don't get that close to a national title without doing something right. Kansas just did the one more thing right. Congratulations.
For the record: This was the first the championship was won in overtime. It was also the first time all the #1 teams made the Final Four

Temptation to co-option is the original sin of journalism, and we're always finding fig leaves to cover it: economics, ideology, awe of authority, secrecy, the claims of empire. In the buildup to the invasion of Iraq we were reminded of what the late great reporter A.J. Liebling meant when he said the press is "the weak slat under the bed of democracy." The slat broke after the invasion and some strange bedfellows fell to the floor: establishment journalists, neo-con polemicists, beltway pundits, right-wing warmongers flying the skull and bones of the "balanced and fair brigade," administration flacks whose classified leaks were manufactured lies - all romping on the same mattress in the foreplay to disaster. For more complete information about The Ridenhour Prizes, as well as past and current winners, please visit
Five years, thousands of casualties, and hundreds of billion dollars later, most of the media co-conspirators caught in flagrante delicto are still prominent, still celebrated, and still holding forth with no more contrition than a weathercaster who made a wrong prediction as to the next day's temperature. The biblical injunction, "Go and sin no more," is the one we most frequently forget in the press. Collectively, we don't seem to learn that all it takes to transform an ordinary politician and a braying ass into the modern incarnation of Zeus and the oracle of Delphi is an oath on the Bible, a flag in the lapel, and the invocation of national security.

The real John McSame behind the corporate media image
If you have any idea that if your Democratic candidate doesn't get the nomination, McSame might be a possible choice (or even if you're not that stupid), please read the following from MoveOn.org. And then send it to your wavering Friends.

Dear MoveOn member,
For all the coverage this week of Senator John McCain's background, there are some important things you won't learn about him from the TV networks. His carefully crafted positive image relies on people not knowing this stuff—and you might be surprised by some of it.
Please check out the list below, and then forward it to your friends, family, and coworkers. We can't rely on the media to tell folks about the real John McCain—but if we all pass this along, we can reach as many people as CNN Headline News does on a good night.

10 things you should know about John McCain (but probably don't):
1. John McCain voted against establishing a national holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Now he says his position has "evolved," yet he's continued to oppose key civil rights laws.1
2. According to Bloomberg News, McCain is more hawkish than Bush on Iraq, Russia and China. Conservative columnist Pat Buchanan says McCain "will make Cheney look like Gandhi."2
3. His reputation is built on his opposition to torture, but McCain voted against a bill to ban waterboarding, and then applauded President Bush for vetoing that ban.3
4. McCain opposes a woman's right to choose. He said, "I do not support Roe versus Wade. It should be overturned."4
5. The Children's Defense Fund rated McCain as the worst senator in Congress for children. He voted against the children's health care bill last year, then defended Bush's veto of the bill.5
6. He's one of the richest people in a Senate filled with millionaires. The Associated Press reports he and his wife own at least eight homes! Yet McCain says the solution to the housing crisis is for people facing foreclosure to get a "second job" and skip their vacations.6
7. Many of McCain's fellow Republican senators say he's too reckless to be commander in chief. One Republican senator said: "The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine. He's erratic. He's hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me."7
8. McCain talks a lot about taking on special interests, but his campaign manager and top advisers are actually lobbyists. The government watchdog group Public Citizen says McCain has 59 lobbyists raising money for his campaign, more than any of the other presidential candidates.8
9. McCain has sought closer ties to the extreme religious right in recent years. The pastor McCain calls his "spiritual guide," Rod Parsley, believes America's founding mission is to destroy Islam, which he calls a "false religion." McCain sought the political support of right-wing preacher John Hagee, who believes Hurricane Katrina was God's punishment for gay rights and called the Catholic Church "the Antichrist" and a "false cult."9
10. He positions himself as pro-environment, but he scored a 0—yes, zero—from the League of Conservation Voters last year.10

Martin we hardly knew ye

While watching the coverage from Memphis today on the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King I saw something I could hardly believe. There was John McCain standing outside the Lorraine Motel paying tribute to King's memory. How hypocritical can one get? Clearly McSame stands for everything Martin fought for and, perhaps, died for. Here are just a few of the ideas that animated the last years of his life. Much of this is a foreign language to McSame and the party he represents.
"I could never again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed in the ghettos,” said King in 1967, “without having first spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today – my own government."
"A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.”
King's economic bill of rights called for massive government jobs programs to rebuild America's cities. He saw a crying need to confront a Congress that had demonstrated its "hostility to the poor" — appropriating "military funds with alacrity and generosity," but providing "poverty funds with miserliness."

Where have you gone, Al Gore, a nation turns its lonely eyes to you, woo, woo, woo

When asked at Pennsylvania town hall if he would nominate Al Gore for his Cabinet, Barak Obama said:
I would. Not only will I, but I will make a commitment that Al Gore will be at the table and play a central part in us figuring out how we solve this problem. He's somebody I talk to on a regular basis. I'm already consulting with him in terms of these issues, but climate change is real. It is something we have to deal with now, not 10 years from now, not 20 years from now. After watching Gore on 60 Minutes last Sunday I concluded that he can accomplish much more by remaining outside the government from where he can continue to pressure those in power, both here and around the world. Joining any administration would almost by definition constrain Gore to act within the limits set by the president.
But the important part of Obama's comments is that they indicate a willingness to take global warming seriously. It also seems to me the first time any of the candidates for president has addressed this fundamental issue.
I know it's tempting for any politician, and Gore is a politician, to have power rather than just influence those ikn power, sometimes with an issue as fundamental as this one power is a constraint rather than lever.

Mukasey lets the 9/11 cat out of the bag

In an attempt to defend giving immunity to telecom companies Attorney General Michael Mukasey said:
We knew that there had been a call from someplace that was known to be a safe house in Afghanistan and we knew that it came to the United States. We didn’t know precisely where it went. We’ve got 3,000 people who went to work that day, and didn’t come home, to show for that.Either the attorney General is lying (remember he's now part of the Bush mafia) or he's revealing administration incompetence of such a magnitude it would be inconceivable but it is, after all, the Bushies at work.
The Clinton lies keep coming
The lies from Se. Clinton seem to keep coming.
In Phila. today, before comparing herself to Rocky she said: "Sen. Obama says he's getting tired of the campaign." Then she compared herself to Rocky claiming she too wouldn't quit.
But here's what Obama actually said Saturday about her staying in the race:
After nearly eight years of the Bush-Cheney lies factory, it's time for some truth from lour leaders.

But here's what Obama actually said Saturday about her staying in the race:
My attitude is that Senator Clinton can run as long as she wants. Her name is on the ballot. She is a fierce and formidable opponent and she obviously believes she would make the best nominee and the best president.

Let the primaries go on

The cries of some Democrats and almost all the pundits that Sen. Clinton is weakening (some say destroying) the Party is nonsense. It keeps the corporate media attention on the Obama-Clinton race. As long as McSame keeps saying dumb things about Iraq and the economy the Democrats will prevail.
What's going to determine the effect on the Party will be what Clinton does when Obama gets the nomination. Assuming they don't run together, and it's clear that its her choice, she will have to strongly support him and campaign for him. If she gives him a luke-warm endorsement and then goes on vacation for a couple of months out of pique the Democrats and the country are in trouble.
If the Clintons treat the party as their private preserve and sit this one out and wait for 2012, then the damage will follow.
March Madness and the Knicks' future
By Andrew:
Even if Texas loses, which at half time looks probable, a silver lining for New York Texans is that they may looking at the player who can help begin the massive turnaround that Knicks fans are ready for. His name is Derrick Rose and is sure to be a top pick in this year's draft. The New York Knicks, because of their "performance" this season will hold one of those picks. Besides Rose, who is the cream of the point guard crop this year, are names like Jerryd Bayless and OJ Mayo. The player who might help the Knicks as much as Rose is playing on the other side of the court in this game. Texas point guard, DJ Augustin. In other words, the Knicks need a point guard and these players all seem like a good start. A starting five of Center Zach Randolph, Power Forward David Lee, Small Forward Wilson Chandler/Ronaldo Balkman, Shooting Guard Jamal Crawford/Nate Robinson, and Point Guard Derrick Rose/DJ Augustin would, without much effort from what looks like Donnie Walsh, bring the Knicks some semblance of respectability and maybe a well deserved sigh of relief.
Update from Dan: Both Texas and Davidson had to play nearly perfect games to make it into the Final Four; Davidson, even though they lost to bigger and stronger Kansas, 59-57, did. Texas, in losing to Memphis, 85-67, didn't.
So the Final Four are set: April 5 will be North Carolina against Kansas and Memphis versus UCLA in San Antonio. With the final April 7. I think it's going to be a boring Final Four.

March Madness: Week two, day three
Tyler Hansborough
UCLA beat Xavier (76-57) to become the first of the Final Four. UCLA is in the Final Four for the 18th time.
Well both #1s are in the Final Four. North Carolina defeated Louisville 83-73. Tyler Hansborough proved how good he really is tonight.
So far I haven't really commented on these games, but I think Louisville played one of the sloppiest games I've seen at this level. I think without all the travelling calls and several bad shot choices they could very well have knocked North Carolina out. But it was not meant to be.
Besides which its tomorrow's games that really matter, particularly Texas.

March Madness - elite eight
So the elite eight is set. After the weekend, we'll have the final four.
The big news tonight is little #10 Davidson upset #3 Wisconsin and is still in the running. Sunday, Davidson will go up against #1 Kansas.
#2 Texas beat #3 Stanford and will play #1 Memphis Sunday.
Tomorrow last night's winners #1 North Carolina will go up against #3 Louisville and #3 Xavier will face #1 UCLA.
Go Texas and Davidson!
Monday begins the season of dissension in our house: Ann (and Andrew) are ardent Mets fans and I have been a Yankee fan forever. (That is except for a brief period when I was pissed of at Steinbrenner.)

The old Bush bait and switch on Iraq
Plumes of smoke rise from the U.S. embassy compound in Baghdad's Green Zone March 27, 2008. A giant column of black smoke was visible near the U.S. embassy in Baghdad's Green Zone on Thursday after an apparent mortar strike, a Reuters reporter said, but the embassy said there were no serious injuries. The latest news from Iraq (ABC News)
I'll leave the final words to Pagtrick Cockburn on Thursday's DemocracyNow: Well, the Iraqi government has decided and has surprised everybody by deciding to send its troops into Basra. Ostensibly, they’re saying it’s to clean up criminal elements in Basra; in reality, it seems an attack on the Mahdi Army, and it’s in alliance with militias that are friendly to the Iraqi government. The Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s demand that the fighters of the Mahdi Army give up their weapons in seventy-two hours, I think it’s extremely unlikely that this will happen. Saddam couldn’t disarm Iraq. It’s not likely that Maliki will succeed in doing so.

The latest news from Iraq (ABC News)
In an attempt to quell the fighting between Shiite militiamen and security forces, authorities in Baghdad have imposed a weekend curfew on the capital. The White House and all its allies have been unusually quiet, only White House press Spokesperson Dana Perino was left to defend the surge:
An official with the command says no unauthorized vehicles, motorcycles or pedestrian traffic will be allowed on the streets from 11 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Sunday, the Associated Press reports.
The curfew was imposed after clashes in the south have become fierce and after 3 days of mortar and rocket attacks targeted the heavily fortified Green Zone in Baghdad. One American government worker was killed in one of those attacks today, according to the U.S. Embassy
This is an Iraqi led and Iraqi initiated operation. And this is what we’ve been wanting to see the Iraqis do is take on more responsibility. …But we know she doesn't write these jokes herself. She's basically handed a script. But this is over the top even for the Bush White House.
The surge created new opportunities and in fact created many more Iraqi Security Forces. …
So I would characterize it as a bold decision — precisely what the critics have asked to see in Iraq, more movement by the Iraqi Security Forces.

On a "military solution" in Iraq
In response to my post on today's candlelight vigil to mark the 4,000 U.S. military death in Iraq, chuck said:
Thanks for taking the time to post your comment.
But I would continue to argue that there is no military solution in Iraq. As an occupying power we are facing an insurgency that has every right to want us out of their country.
It's not even clear - because no one who talks about it ever it makes clear - what a "military solution" would look like.
Only the Iraqis can solve their own problems. Whatever that solution will look like. By continuing to occupy their country we are only delaying an end to the problems that our invasion exacerbated in the first place.
Just as our "leaders" lied to get us into Iraq, so they continue to lie to justify our staying there for a long time. Now, of course, people like Bush, Cheney and McSame have 4,000 GI deaths to guilt trip us into supporting their failed strategy.
We should not have invaded in the first place and should not be there now.
There does appear to be a military solution. The Iraqis are finding that tolerating terrorists will not bring them peace.

March 25: Candlelight Vigil to mark 4,000 U.S. military deaths in Iraq

From NYC United for Peace and Justice:
Candlelight Vigil to Mark the 4000th Death of a U.S. Soldier
A candlelight vigil to mark the death of the 4000th US military personnel killed in Iraq, to mourn the lives lost and call attention to the human cost of the Iraq War
Tuesday, March 25, 6:30 p.m.
South Plaza, Union Square
Sponsored by American Friends Service Committee, NYC United for Peace and Justice, Military Families Speak Out
For further information contact: Iris Bieri, American Friends Service Committee, 937-266-1574
Leslie Kielson, Coordinator, UFPJ-NYC, 917-613-4657
On Saturday, thousands lined 14th Street in River to River: Join Hands for Peace and then gathered on Park Avenue to commemorate the 5th anniversary and all the casualties of the Iraq War. We will return again tomorrow, since another tragic milestone has been reached: the death of the 4000th U.S. soldier. Memorials will be held throughout the country to commemorate both the military and civilian dead in Iraq. NYC United for Peace and Justice and the American Friends Service Committee's New York Metropolitan Office will host a vigil in the South Plaza of Union Square at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow evening.
For more information on other national vigils visit
We recognize that there is no military solution to the Iraq War. Therefore, we say "Not One More Death, Not One More Dollar" can be lost in sustaining war and occupation. A clear majority in the U.S. and Iraq want troops to come home.
The Iraq War has lasted longer than the U.S. involvement in World War II, and 4,000 deaths exceeds the number of U.S. military personnel killed in the first four years of Vietnam. By best medical estimates, more than 650,000 Iraqis have died since the U.S. invasion, but other sources put the death toll at over a million. The U.S. spends more than $720 million a day on this war -- more than $501 billion total to date, with no end in sight.
AFSC New York Metropolitan Regional Director Elizabeth Enloe stated,
Continued U.S. military presence in Iraq promises only further U.S. and Iraqi deaths and injuries, more widows and orphans, and more seeds for future hostilities. Congressional funding must be used to support Iraqi-led reconciliation and reconstruction efforts and to care for and honor the veterans who are returning from this war.

March Madness: Day Four
Well, the first long basketball weekend is over. And we're down from the original 64 teams to the "sweet sixteen." The two biggest losers were #2 Duke which lasted into the second round this year (unlike last year when they went out in the first round) before losing to #7 West Virginia and #2 Georgetown which was upset by #10 Davidson
Of the other upsetmakers, only #12 Villanova and #12 Western Kentucky survive. Otherwise all the other top seeds are still alive (#1s: North Carolina, Memphis, Kansas and UCLA and the remaining #2s: Tennessee and Texas). I continue to root for Ann's alma mater, Texas.
Well, that's it for basketball till Thursday when it all starts up again. Meanwhile there's lots of stuff to talk about.

March Madness: Day 3
Everything went as expected except for one major upset.
What little Belmont couldn't do Thursday, #7 West Virginia did today: knocked off #2 Duke, 73-67. All the other favorites are intact. Tomorrow (Sun.) is another day.

N.J. Attorney General attacks juicy college gossip site
The brouhaha over JuicyCampus.com, a college gossip website, raises some interesting questions. The first thing to know about the site is that all posts - discussing the sexual orientation and proclivities and other personal information about people on various campuses - are anonymous. Of course, I'd want to remain anonymous with posts like this one: "OK, lets here [sic] he [sic] votes for worst professor...."
The New Jersey Attorney General Anne Milgram is attacking this website indirectly rather than head on. According to Milgrim JuicyCampus may be violating the state's Consumer Fraud Act by suggesting it doesn't allow offensive material but providing no enforcement of that rule - and no way for users to report or dispute the material. I suspect that she is using this method of attack to avoid defense claims of "freedom of expression" and "freedom of the press." But it seems to me that cowards who use anonymous posts to demean other people are not covered by these freedoms. We have laws against defamation and libel. But these laws can't be enforced if you don't know who defamed or libeled you. (It's true that legitimate journalists use anonymous sources, but the writer's by-line is there for all to see and sue.) So, it would seem to me that a direct legal attack against the website owner, Lime Blue of Reno, Nev., would be much more effective.
But I think there is a more important aspect to all this fuss. The only reason that Juicy and other seemingly salacious websites work is because of our uptight attitudes toward sex. Anyone living in New York these past few weeks has seen the effects of these views. Governors being attacked not for what they do politically but for who they have sex with. With the immature way the media covered these stories there will be more and more Juicys cropping up. If there is a buck to be made, someone will take advantage of the situation.
Although most of the posts on Juicy are relatively innocuous, a few, it seems to me, could easily be defined as defamatory or libelous. For example: "Skankiest Alums: I vote (Name withheld-Dan)--that slut pulled more trains than the little engine that could! 03-22-2008/Wake Forest U." Or "(name withheld-Dan)
Biggest slut at NYU??? She fucked my friend and then blew me a month later...No class at all. 03-21-2008 New York University."
I'm not sure why anyone would read this garbage, but If you want to hurt someone, at least have the courage to own your action.

March Madness/Day 2: College basketball
Today (Fri.) was much more interesting than yesterday. Four outright upsets, all in Tampa, and one more in Raleigh. In Raleigh, #10 Davidson downed #7 Gonzaga, 87-75. In Tampa, for the first time in the history of the tournament, there were four upsets at one site: #13 Siena (83) over #4 Vanderbilt (62), #13 San Diego (70) eliminated #4 UConn (69) in OT, #12 Western Kentucky (101) snuck by #5 Drake (99) in a buzzer-beater and, in the day's last game, #12 Villanova (75) came back to beat #5 Clemson (69). Everything else went pretty much as expected.
So on to the round of 32. Which starts tomorrow (Sat). Go Texas (Ann's Alma Mater).

MoveOn election coverage petition
MoveOn is delivering the following PETITION TO NBC, CBS, ABC, MSNBC, CNN, AND OTHER MEDIA OUTLETS:
Reporters like NBC's Tim Russert focused on the "Reverend Wright controversy" only after FOX and other right-wing media did. It happens over and over: FOX airs a right-wing smear and the mass media repeat it. Film director Robert Greenwald just released a short video called FOX Attacks Obama: Part 2 which shows how it happens.
We are launching a petition demanding the big networks stop parroting FOX and distracting Americans from real issues. We'll hand-deliver your signatures to major media outlets next week. Watch the video, and sign the petition.

FOX is a Republican mouthpiece, not a legitimate news organization. Real news organizations must reject FOX's smears of Barack Obama, not parrot them and distract Americans from the pressing issues of the day. This week, Barack Obama gave one of the most honest and inspiring speeches on race in American history after weathering days of the media's relentless, divisive, and racially charged attacks. But have you wondered where these attacks came from and why they dominated the news?

March Madness - college basketball

Well March Madness is upon us (and I don't mean Cheney and McSame in the Middle East). I'm talking about college basketball.
Today everything went pretty much as expected. The only upset was #11 Kansas State upending #6 USC. But the real moment of the tournament so far was #2 Duke needing a buzzer-beater to escape with its life against tiny #15 Belmont, 71-70. To put this in perspective only four times in NCAA tournament history has #15 defeated #2.

Bush's Iraq fantasy

This morning while thousands of Americans were protesting the fifth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq the president of the United States spoke the following words:
Five years ago tonight, I promised the American people that in the struggle ahead "we will accept no outcome but victory." Today, standing before men and women [at the Pentagon] who helped liberate a nation, I reaffirm the commitment. The battle in Iraq is noble, it is necessary, and it is just. And with your courage, the battle in Iraq will end in victory. God bless. He was wrong in 2003 on the deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln (see photo above) and he's still wrong.
But perhaps the most frightening aspect of this is that I think he believes these words despite all the evidence to the contrary. It seems as if the neo-con demons (who are neither neo, nor con, but old-fashioned warmongers) have taken control of his mind and he sees the world only through their eyes.
Unfortunately John McSame, who is the putative Republican candidate for president, clearly believes the same mythology.
It seems hard to imagine that a sane person could actually claim that the invasion of a sovereign nation that had done nothing to us is "noble," "necessary" or "just."
As usual, Pete seeger best sums up the situation in Iraq five years in:
Waist deep! Neck deep!It seems time for both the "big fool" and his latest disciple the "little fool" John McCain to regain their sanity and realize to "push on" means only more death and destruction in Iraq. Although for them it may be too late. They have simply too much invested in this fiasco.
Soon even a Tall man'll be over his head, we're
Waist deep in the Big Muddy!
[We're actually already over our heads]
And the big fool says to push on!

Obama's speech

Yesterday (Tues.) Obama gave an extra- ordinary speech on race and how it impacts the thinking of both the white and Black community particularly people of a certain generation. And how he would like to get beyond the divisiveness without forgetting the history that brought us here.
It may be the most politically significant speech on race in 45 years. You should hear it and decide for yourself. Perhaps its most significant aspect is that it is an honest statement by a national politician. And that makes it virtually unique.
Obama speech on race
What dimension do Cheney and McCain live in?
Quotes of the Day: (Quotes from today's Democracy Now)
Dick Cheney: “So if you reflect back on those five years [of U.S. occupation of Iraq], I think it’s been a difficult, challenging, but nonetheless successful endeavor and that we’ve come a long way in five years and that it’s been well worth the effort… I’m pleased to be able to return next week to Washington and report to the President that we are making significant progress in Iraq.”
Republican presidential candidate John McCain shared a similar analysis based on his trip to Iraq.
Sen. John McCain: “We find a continued success of the strategy, continued training and equipping of the Iraqi military and them functioning more efficiently.”
And now some truth:
[According to] Amnesty [International]: Human Rights Situation in Iraq is “Disastrous” Amnesty International says the current human rights situation in Iraq is “disastrous.” In a new report, Amnesty said, “Hundreds of people are being killed every month in the pervasive violence, while countless lives are threatened every day by poverty, cuts to power and water supplies, food and medical shortages, and rising violence against women and girls.” The International Committee of the Red Cross warned Monday the humanitarian situation in Iraq remains among the most critical in the world. 27 million Iraqis have no functioning water or sanitation facilities. The Red Cross says Iraq’s healthcare system is now in its worst shape ever.
