A Mexican labor delegation, in conjunction with United Students Against Sweatshops and USLEAP, is coming to NYC on Oct. 10 to draw attention to their struggle to organize a union in their maquila (sweatshop). The workers, from the state of Hidalgo (60 miles north of Mexico City) labor in conditions such as forced overtime, needle sticks, over-exposure to dangerous chemicals, child labor and forced pregnancy tests. The workers make costumes for Rubie's, Mattel and Warner Brothers, and earn less than $5 a day. About five months ago the workers in the maquila began to form a union, however today the management of the factory has locked out the workforce.

We are asking people to dress up in costumes (the workers make Halloween costumes) and bring signs encouraging the brands to recognize the workers' wish to form a union. Join us to urge Target, who carries Rubie's, Mattel and Warner Bros. products to recognize the union in Mexico.
