Aug. 8: Hell No! We won't Go!

We Won't Go!!!

Mass leafleting
Monday, August 8 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm
Military Recruiting Station, Chambers Street between Greenwich and Hudson Streets.

In the face of deepening opposition to the war and occupation of Iraq, the military has stepped up its recruiting efforts, much of which is concentrated in the public schools. Recruiters are given students' personal information, and most parents don't know they can Opt Out of this disclosure. Preying on the lack of jobs available for young people, particularly people of color, and the rising cost of college tuition, recruiters promise a way out. They usually fail to mention that less than one-third of soldiers ever receive money for college, or the more than 1,900 soldiers killed in Iraq.

Yet despite these efforts, recruitment numbers continue to fall. According to Major General Michael Rochelle, the U.S. Army's recruiting commander, "Today’s conditions represent the most challenging conditions we have seen in recruiting in my 33 years in this uniform." The fundamental problem is that recruiters are required to sign up new recruits for an illegal, immoral and unethical war that is based on lies. And more and more young people and their families are saying NO!!!
Our last leafleting in Brooklyn was a huge success. More than 70 people turned out for a spirited leafleting that got a tremendous response from people in the community. This time we will be trying to reach as many people as possible in lower Manhattan (not far from the Borough of Manhattan Community College/BMCC), and your assistance is needed. Please join us and help spread the word about this important event. This will also serve as a kick-off event for a CUNY-wide counter-recruitment campaign.

We demand:

Parents be adequately informed of Opt-Out procedure
Recruiters out of the schools
An end to the war in Iraq

Sponsored by: NYC Counter-Recruitment Campaign

Participating groups include:
Educators to Stop the War; UFTers To Stop the War; Brooklyn Parents for Peace; Campus Anti-War Network; Code Pink, Brooklyn Peace Action; People Against the Draft; Hudson Valley Veterans for Peace; GI Special; International Socialist Organization; Progressive Labor Party; Citizens for Legitimate Government; Progressive Students Association; United N.Y. / Black Radical Congress.
