Remember only yesterday when the current occupants of the White House were talking about the Global Struggle Against Violent Extremism rather than the War on terror. Remember when General Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, explained all this to the National Press Club on Monday, when he said
that he had objected to the use of the term 'war on terrorism' before, because if you call it a war, then you think of people in uniform as being the solution. At which point I asked whether anyone had told the President about the war being over.
Well someone finally did. And I suspect that Bush pitched a fit, stamped his feet and refused to give up his Air Force flight suit.
So today Defense Secy. Rumsfeld said
Ultimately, success in Iraq and in the broader war on terror will depend on promoting freedom and democracy as an alternative to what Rumsfeld described as "the grim vision of the terrorists."
Ah well, easy come easy go. Many trial balloons are punctured by unruly children.
